Sustainability is an important aspect of modern architecture, as more people look to reduce their carbon footprint. Modular homes offer several advantages in this regard, meaning that they are an attractive option for those who are looking for a more environmentally friendly living space.

Here at The Pod Factory, we are committed to reducing our impact on the environment throughout every stage of the design, manufacturing, and installation process.

Sourcing the Materials

The majority of materials used in construction are either highly recyclable or can be processed into new products. This leads to reduced landfill waste and greenhouse gas emissions. We also work with a range of suppliers who prioritise sustainability in their production processes

Designing

By law, all new residential and commercial buildings must meet Net Zero Energy Building (NZEB) standards. The Pod Factory implements several design strategies to achieve this status, including the below.

1. Design:

This involves designing buildings that take advantage of natural light and heat to reduce energy demand.

• Windows: Our designs incorporate the use of either double or triple-paned windows, depending on preference. These are extremely efficient at retaining heat in the winter and cool air in the summer months, providing a comfortable living environment all year round.

• Insulation: Our buildings are equipped with a comprehensive insulation system that keeps the temperature inside the design consistent, no matter the weather conditions outside.

• Light: Our buildings feature large, strategically placed windows and skylights allowing natural light to illuminate the living space. Not only does this create a bright and airy atmosphere, but it also helps to reduce energy costs by minimising the need for artificial lighting during the day.

2. High-performance building services:
Ventilation:

Our buildings are designed to provide ample ventilation to ensure a comfortable living environment. Our designs effectively regulate indoor temperature, humidity, and air exchange by incorporating state-of-the-art ventilation systems. This helps eliminate unwanted odours, moisture, and indoor pollutants, creating a cleaner, and healthier living space. The systems are designed to work quietly and effectively, providing a continuous supply of fresh air to the building.

Heating:

We offer a range of heating options to suit your preferences or needs including heat pumps, gas heating, electric heating or oil heating.

Efficient Production

The controlled environment of a factory enables mass production and repeat processes, resulting in improved control over the building process. The use of modern, automated equipment leads to standardisation, thereby increasing the quality of construction and reducing waste. We take measures to reduce waste and increase recycling at our factory by segregating waste streams, compacting and recycling plastic and cardboard, and reusing materials whenever possible.

Transport Optimisation

We are also committed to reducing the environmental impact of our transportation processes. Building the units in our purpose-built factory before the delivery/installation allows us to minimise the number of trips required to the delivery site, reducing both our carbon footprint and the impact of our operations on local communities.

End-of-Life Management

We are also committed to continuously reviewing and improving the sustainability of the entire process, from sourcing to end-of-life management. While other materials may lose effectiveness over time, steel can retain both functionality and appearance over extended lengths of time. Our Steel Frame Building system has been awarded NSAI / IAB Agrément Certification (No. 19/0412) for the manufacture and erection of structural cold-formed Light Gauge Steel Frame Buildings which achieve a minimum design life of 60 years in accordance with BS 7543:2015.

In conclusion, sustainability within construction is a growing concern for many homeowners. Modular homes offer a range of benefits, making them an increasingly popular choice for those who are looking for a home that is both comfortable and responsible.
